Alright, I said that would be the last word, but here’s the last… um… Alert.

I was going to leave it at that, but this discussion became bigger than I expected, and I think it would be a bad idea to talk so much about how bad RP fans are without acknowledging what a special and unique community this is. So here’s way too many words for you.

For the record, I truly believe that it’s a minority of fans that do the creepy bullying. Most of the retsupurae fans I’ve met here on tumblr or elsewhere have been just splendid. As a fanbase it’s one of the most diverse I’ve seen, it’s more sensitive to people’s feelings than probably any other fanbase I’ve seen*, and (this is particularly important to me) one of the least receptive to cheap bigotry for laughs. I have seen fewer slurs in the Youtube comments for RP videos than probably anything else I watch online.

A story:

I have recently started watching Video Game Championship Wrestling. It’s hilarious, and I’ve become just a little bit obsessed. But every time Poison enters the ring slurs start cropping up (usually under the guise of humor), and I have to leave the chat. It’s starting to get better, but for a while I was close to stopping watching altogether.

But it also made me realize just how amazing having a group like this is. The fact that as a group of fans on the internet we can be self critical and take steps to solve problems with our behavior** is kind of a fucking miracle.

So, in summary, stop it with the flagellation already, you’re all beautiful little special snowflakes.

*with the exception of supergreatfriend’s fans. For whatever reason, the SGF crowd is polite to the point of creepiness.

**Just so no one thinks I’m sparing myself from any criticism, I’ll let y’all know: the WarioWare video that caused the whole AARP blowup used to be one of my favorite videos. Despite having several trans people I consider some of my closest friends, it wasn’t until the blowup and Diabetus’ response that I realized how much stuff in that video wasn’t right. Life is about education.

And Retsupurae are now actively censoring the names of people that they’re RPing. I don’t fucking blame them. At a minute in, they read the guy’s name out, but as it starts being read, there’s a big ol’ censor beep, with “It’s a crazy username with tons of numbers and letters, don’t flood the guy’s channel with shit.” on the lower half of the screen.

Nice to see that the fanbase are bad enough that the duo have to take precautions to NOT get the guy known. Granted, they named the time and title of the video, so some smarter folks will be able to find it. But the general populace are apparently so bad that slowbeef and Diabetus need to actively keep others from finding the people they mock.

I’ve actually been planning to address this for a while, but I suppose now’s the best time.

Using retsupurae as an excuse to bully people on the internet is A) wrong and B) really, really weird. It’s just abusing slowbeef and Diabetus’ work to justify your own creepy need to assert your superiority over strangers. If you do this sort of thing habitually, you should really try and find someone to talk to someone professional about it. I really don’t think any of you who follow this blog would do this, but, since its apparently gotten this bad, it needs to be said, I feel.
